FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The SCID© has been around since 1982 and has been considered the gold standard since its inception for several reasons. First, the SCID is one of the only assessment instruments that follows the DSM© diagnostic criteria. Second, the SCID© remains one of the only psychiatric assessment instruments that has consistently demonstrated the psychometric properties of validity and reliability. Third, the SCID© has a standardized set of probes and follow-up probes to increase fidelity, reliability and validity of the data. Lastly, SCID Institute has a standardized set of training, supervision, certification, and data quality control protocols which provides high degrees of confidence in data quality standards.

The SCID® has been the companion to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders© (DSM®) for the past 35 years. The SCID® has been considered to be the gold standard of psychiatric assessments worldwide for the past three decades. Both the DSM® and SCID® are published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA). In a recent psychometric study comparing the SCID-5® to other common psychiatric measures in the field of mental health, the SCID-5® was found to reduce False Positives by 80% compared to the others (Wu et al., 2021; Article about the psychometric properties of the SCID-5.pdf. This translates into significant cost savings for clinical trials and other research studies by reducing the sample size needed, reducing the study timeline, greatly reducing error, and thereby greatly increasing power of the statistical analyses.  Assuming a sample size of N=1,000, using the SCID-5 can save the average clinical trial $1.6M. Using our team of SCID Experts will multiply those savings for your next study.

There are three primary versions of the SCID-5 available. The Research Version (SCID-5-RV®), the Clinical Version (SCID-5-CV®) and the Clinical Trials Version (SCID-5-CT®). The most comprehensive version is the SCID-5-RV® which includes current and lifetime assessments of a wide variety of disorders and is recommended for when the most comprehensive evaluations are needed. The SCID-5-RV® and SCID-5-CT® can be tailored to a specific study to ensure patients with certain mental conditions are included or excluded from a clinical trial for cleaner results. The SCID-5-CV® includes current assessments of the most common mental disorders among help-seeking patients.

This information can be found on the SCID-5 publisher’s website: APA – The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5®

When used to help guide the evaluation of non-personality disorders in clinical or forensic settings, or for training purposes (e.g., to improve diagnostic interviewing skills), the SCID-5-CV® is the recommended version.

When the SCID-5® is being used for research purposes, the recommended version depends on the diagnostic needs of the research study. The various versions of the SCID-5® differ both in terms of which diagnoses, specifiers, and subtypes are covered and the assessment time frames (i.e., current vs. lifetime). Specifically, we recommend these products for the following circumstances:

SCID-5-CV® (Clinician Version)

If the range of diagnoses covered in the SCID-5-CV® and the absence of lifetime assessments for many of the disorders is sufficient for a particular research study, we generally recommend the SCID-5-CV given its superior ease of use.

SCID-5-RV® (Research Version)

If the range of diagnoses covered in the SCID-5-CV® is insufficient (for instance because a Non-Patient Version of the Overview is needed or the assessment of certain disorders of interest are needed but omitted from the SCID-5-CV®, such as Eating Disorders), then the SCID-5-RV® is recommended.

     • If the study requirements include making modifications such as omitting certain disorders, changing the order in which disorders are assessed, or altering diagnostic time frames, the SCID-5-RV® is the only instrument that allows for such customization.

SCID-5-CT® (Clinical Trials Version)

If used in a research context to confirm whether subjects meet the diagnostic inclusion or exclusion criteria of a protocol. Most often the SCID-5-CT® is used by pharmaceutical companies in clinical trials. The major advantage of the SCID-5-CT® over the other SCID-5® versions is that its lean, streamlined format only includes those sections that are relevant to a specific protocol, thereby reducing administration time. Because the SCID-5-CT® must be tailored to the primary inclusion criteria of the study, customization can be done by using one of the five available SCID-5-CT® templates (which requires that the purchaser modify the SCID-5-CT® to fit the actual inclusion and exclusion criteria for the study protocol) or by making a request for customization based on the inclusion/exclusion criteria of the protocol.
